Project OverviewKaalo Nederland in Somalia focuses on sustainable development projects that directly meet the needs of the local population. For a long time, the emphasis was on projects in the area of education and health. Helping mothers and children from the nomadic and farming communities is another central theme. At the moment attention is focused on the (vulnerable) young people in the state of Puntland. Kaalo Nederland with supporting from Wilde Ganzen Foundation in Netherland implemented the solar energy project for youth centre in Garowe. The project aim is to equip the youth through solar installation project. The youth internally fully equipped with the necessary electrical wiring for lighting, computers, offices and canteen so to benefit these valuable equipment we must have electricity power so the aims of this project is to get free and reliable electricity in the centre because in the following years is planning to expand the centre activities. Solar energy helps the environment because it reduces   the need to burn fossil fuels and carbon emissions. Solar contributes fast growing of economic development, job creation and income generating activities of vendors. More than 15% roughly of income savings of GDP per year generated solar entrepreneurs. Solar energy is a clear source of energy from sunlight. It preserves healthy environment and sustainable development obtaining new knowledge of renewable and solar energy is an increased job opportunities and solar entrepreneurship development.
Project ObjectivesThe main objective of the project was to install the solar panel system in order to reduce the monthly energy bill of the youth centre and Library in Garowe and contribute to mitigation effort of Green Houses Gases (GHG) emissions. To ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy to the city centre and youth in Garowe, Puntland. To empower the  city centre and youth to ensure energy saving through integration of on or off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) system, and energy cost reduction through lighting management systems.
Project Achievement Achieved project goals and objectives Installed 40 solar panel with 24 batteries and other necessary solar equipmentsTransported the solar panel from Nederland to Garowe. The young people receive training to install and maintain these solar panels.  Created employment and work experience for these young people.Ensured access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy to the city centre and youth in Garowe, PuntlandReduced the monthly energy bill of the youth centre and Library in Garowe and contribute to mitigation effort of Green Houses Gases (GHG) emissions
