Completed Project – 4

Emergency Water Trucking and Food Distribution (2022)

In response to the severe drought crisis that struck Puntland in 2022—caused by the failure of the Gu’ rainy season—Kaalo Nederland launched an emergency humanitarian intervention to support vulnerable communities facing acute water and food shortages.

Nomadic populations, in particular, were severely affected as their livestock perished and they faced worsening hunger and dehydration. In this time of crisis, Kaalo Nederland took urgent action to prevent further suffering and loss of life.

Project Highlights:

  • In September 2022, Kaalo Nederland implemented an Emergency Water Trucking and Food Distribution Project in Budunbuto village, targeting both rural and urban residents.
  • 150 households received life-saving aid, which included:
    • Three bags of staple foods per household (rice, beans, and pasta)
    • 2,000 liters of clean drinking water per household—sufficient for both human consumption and livestock needs

Impact:

  • The project directly benefited over 1,000 individuals, helping to sustain them through the height of the drought.
  • It provided crucial relief for one full month, bridging the gap until the next rainfall arrived.

This emergency response aligned with:

  • SDG 2 – Zero Hunger
  • SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation
  • SDG 1 – No Poverty

By delivering timely and essential humanitarian aid, the project mitigated suffering, preserved human dignity, and supported community survival during one of the most challenging periods in recent years.
