Completed Project – 5

Income Generation Skills for Women (2022)

In 2022, Kaalo Nederland, in partnership with Shabelle Skills Center, implemented a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program aimed at empowering displaced women with practical, income-generating skills.

The project targeted 60 breadwinner women living in Shabelle IDP Camp in Garowe, many of whom were the sole providers for their families. The primary goal was to support economic empowerment and livelihood improvement by equipping these women with skills to launch and sustain small businesses.

Project Highlights:

  • Six-month training program in tailoring and fabric dyeing
  • Curriculum focused on hands-on learning in:
    • Clothing design and tailoring
    • Pattern making and fabric cutting
    • Fabric dyeing and finishing techniques
  • Upon successful completion, each participant received a sewing machine to start her own business and generate income independently.

Impact:

This initiative significantly contributed to:

  • Gender equality and women’s empowerment (SDG 5)
  • Decent work and economic growth (SDG 8)
  • Poverty reduction among displaced communities (SDG 1)

The project not only built individual capacity but also strengthened community resilience by enabling refugee women to break the cycle of dependency and become active contributors to their families and local economy.
