Communities across the Puntland State of Somalia are facing one of the harshest impacts of climate change. Recurrent droughts, now more frequent and more intense, continue to threaten lives and livelihoods. Some areas in the Nugaal region and parts of Mudug have not received rain for more than a year. Pastoral households, whose survival depends on livestock, have been hit hardest as animals weaken and die due to the severe shortage of water and pasture.
In response to this critical situation, Kaalo Nederland conducted emergency water trucking from 10 to 13 November 2025. During this intervention, 40 of the most affected households in Budunbuto, Nugaal region, received clean water sufficient to sustain them for one month. This intervention provided immediate relief for families struggling to access even the most basic needs.
While this support brought momentary safety to the selected households, the scale of need across the region remains far greater than what any single organization can meet. The drought continues to threaten food security, health and stability for thousands of people.
Kaalo Nederland remains committed to advocating for drought-affected communities and mobilizing resources to support them. We will continue working with partners, donors and local authorities to deliver assistance where it is needed most and to amplify the voices of those enduring the impacts of climate change.
